Getting Started! Where Do You Go From Here?
Moving Forward With Your Fresh Start
You need to talk to a bankruptcy attorney. We talk to people about all their solution to their financial problems. This involves a free initial consultation. At your appointment we will review your debts, and advise you of the effect of the applicable bankruptcy laws on your situation. There are some things you can do to make this meeting more fruitful-not just for the attorney but for you are mentioned below.
The Initial Meeting With Your Attorney
Do not be afraid to come in and meet with us. You have enough financial pressure you do not need to create more. After all attorneys put their socks on in the morning just the same as you do. You are not required to have a credit report on hand to discuss your situation but please obtain one. Do not get too bogged down in all this. Absent an emergency bankruptcy due to something like foreclosure bankruptcy progresses one step at a time. The following is a list of material that will make our meeting more meaningful. Ultimately you will need this information to fill out your bankruptcy worksheet.
All companies/people you owe with the name, address, account number, purchase date and amount due. Some, but not all of these, will be on your credit report.
- Payroll check stub for each job over the last six months.
- Amount of your recent federal and state tax refund.
- Gross income for this year and the two prior years.
- County tax assessment for each piece of land you have owned in the last four years.
- Print out from any investment accounts.
- Life insurance policies.
- Any car lease.
- Declaration page of automobile insurance for all vehicles you own.
- Deeds to land you own or are buying/current lease or lot rent agreement.
- Bank or Credit Union accounts for the last two years.
You should leave your initial appointment with a clear sense of what your options are and exactly what you should do and need to do to have a brighter financial future. This is your first big step in getting control of your finances. It may feel scary but ultimately it will be a relief.
